Two British skiers have fallen to their deaths in the French Alps. The two men, understood to be in their 20s and from Cambridge, were on holiday in Chamonix-Mont-Blance with a tour operator and skiing off-piste when they fell “several 100 metres”, according to police.
Police have opened an investigation into the tragedy and were this evening questioning the third member of the group, aged in his 20s.
A police spokesman said: “A third man, who was also British, raised the alarm just after 11am and mountain rescue services arrived within 10 minutes but the two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
“It is understood that the three men were all on holiday in the region.”
He added: “The deceased were skiing off-piste but the route is very well-known and is popular with skiers.
“Today the conditions were very unfavourable. The snow was very compacted and very icy and it is believed that both the deceased slipped.
“They fell several hundred metres to their deaths.”
The UK Foreign Office said it is in contact with the French authorities and providing support to the victims’ families.
