‘Might see me with Skeps and Darkz, your crew look like Kevin and Perry / Everytime we come through the dance, gonna feel the bassline up in your belly’
Josh Bruce, better known as Bru-C, is a 26 year-old MC and Entrepreneur from Nottingham. Founder of Krudd, Bru-C has worked hard to create a series of immensely successful events across the UK and there is no denying that he knows his way round the dance. Quoted ‘The Voice of Bassline in 2017’ by UKF, Bru-C is known for his high-energy performances and his huge collaborations with some of the biggest names in the bassline industry.
After the release of his newest EP ‘Affiliation,’ there is no denying that Bru-C is just going to carry on getting bigger and better. Produced by his music producer friends, Skepsis and Darkzy, the EP is a strong force to be reckoned with.
‘Affiliation’, the first song on the EP is a brag about CruCast, which is the independently owned record label that Bru-C, Skepsis and Darkzy are signed to. It appears that Bru-C is very aware of how huge the three of them are in the world of bassline, stating that the three of them are ‘controlling the scene.’ The drop and backing music is heavy – it shows the full scale of pitch within bassline, sounding very deep and then escalating into high sounds. In fact, it kind of sounds like an old video game and is similar to Dubstep.
For me, the stand out songs on the EP are ‘Take it Slow’ and ‘Hide The Ting.’ ‘Take it slow’ is unique and well produced. My favourite thing about this tune is that the whole song works well as Skepsis has ensured that the whole song ties together. It’s also refreshing to hear Bru-C sing within this. I’m so used to hearing him spit bars, that it was actually a surprise when this song was released.
‘Hide The Ting’ couldn’t represent Nottingham more. With a feature from Window Kid, and produced by Darkzy – all three of them are from Nottingham and it presents the powerful scene within 0115. Darkzy has done a great job in making this song unique sounding, and it’s different to the mass amount of bassline music that exists already. I think this is because it’s dark sounding, with structured heavy beats that repeat.
