Former Rohingya MP and businessman, Aung Zaw Win, was arrested at Yangon airport when he was about to leave the country on a business trip.
The Burmese government issued a statement saying that the reason behind his imprisonment was that he had been accused of financing a Rohingya military group – Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.
Aung Zaw Win, who remains in custody despite not being questioned yet, was an MP for the Union Solidarity and Development party.
The imprisonment of Aung Zaw Win demonstrates that the problems are far from over. It has been seen as proof that the Rohingya are still under threat from the Burmese military and government.
“The government and military [is] sending a signal to all of the Rohingya living and working in Yangon that they are also under threat, that they want to destroy the whole Rohingya community, not just those in Rahkine,” said Nay San Lwin, a Rohingya activist.
Millions of Rohingya have fled Myanmar by crossing over the border into Bangladesh and living in a precarious situation in refugee camps.
