The Film Independent Spirit Awards, which took place on Saturday, was a very special ceremony in which many lower budget films and films out of the mainstream were also recognised.
This year’s nominees included ‘The Big Sick’, ‘Good Time’ and ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ and also includes some mainstream contenders like ‘Get Out’, ‘Call Me By Your Name’ and ‘Lady Bird’.
Nick Kroll and John Mulaney were once again the hosts at the ceremony and delivered a witty and politically-relevant opening monologue in which they went over the highlights of this year’s films and also took the chance to once again talk up against sexual harassment.
“Last year everyone famous died,” said Mulaney in the opening monologue. “This year everyone famous wishes they were dead.” This was clearly a reference to how the wave of sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein, Brett Ratner and Kevin Spacey will probably mean the end of their careers.
Chile’s ‘A Fantastic Woman’ won in the Best International Film category. Salma Hayek took to the stage and fought back against Trump’s comment about shithole countries. “This award had never gone to a shithole nation because there are no shithole nations,” said Salma Hayek.
‘Get Out’ was undoubtedly the biggest winner of the night – and one of the most surprising films of last year. It came out on top in the Best Feature category in which it was up against ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ and ‘Call Me By Your Name’. Jordan Peele took home the Best Director award.
“This project didn’t start as a statement, it began as me wanting to make a film in my favorite genre,” said first-time director Jordan Peele in his acceptance speech. “Our truths are the most powerful weapons we have against the lies in this world so keep doing what you’re doing.”
