State police say four gunmen have burst into a hospital in the Mexican resort of Cancun and shot to death a drug gang suspect and his female companion.
The suspected drug trafficker was Alfonso Contreras Espinoza, alias “El Poncho”, according to a state official who was not authorized to be quoted by name.
Contreras Espinoza purportedly headed Cancun operations for the Gulf drug cartel. The hyper-violent Jalisco cartel has been moving into the resort.
The victim was being held at local prison on weapons charges and had been allowed out under guard for treatment at a hospital for leg problems.
State police said on Monday (Tuesday NZ Time) the attack “was a possible settling of accounts between drug gangs.”
The private hospital is located near Cancún’s tourist zone.
In less than two weeks the incident was the third troubling event in the state. undetonated explosive devices were found on a tourist ferry on Thursday, that runs between the Caribbean resorts of Playa del Carmen and the island of Cozumel. A blast on 21 February shook another ferry plying the same route, which injured 19 Mexicans and at least five US citizens.
Cancún, which is a popular tourist place, has been largely spared the violence plaguing the rest of Mexico. But in January 2017, gunmen invaded the state prosecutors’ office in Cancún, killing four people.
