In celebration of the Metropolitan Opera’s 50th Anniversary, the company has commissioned the creation of ‘The Opera House’, a film following the long and remarkable 50 year history of the opera company and its evolution in an ever changing New York.
The film, directed by award-winning documentarian Susan Froemke, was produced using rare archival footage, still photographs, and interviews with prominant figures who helped shape the societal lifestyle surrounding the Met. Appearances will include General Manager Rudolf Bing, who was responsible for the move to the opera’s current home, Wallace Harrison, designer of the gorgeous Metropolitan Opera building, and famous soprano Leontyne Price, who in 1966, starred in the Met’s opening opera, Anthony and Cleopatra.
Susan Froemke is very well known through her work on the Grey Gardens documentary and, most recently, her work on The Met in Japan and In Rehearsal: A New Butterfly for the Met.
Head to the theater to see the incredible journey of ‘The Opera House’, from the creation of the multi-floored building to the many artists, architects and other influencers who helped shape the 50’s and 60’s culture surrounding the famed Opera house.
