A environmental group called A Plastic Planet have been campaigning tirelessly to get supermarkets to go plastic-free. Finally, their campaigning has given them some results.
A supermarket in Amsterdam called Ekoplaza will be opening today with a brand new aisle full of more than 700 plastic-free products. A Plastic Planet are hoping that other supermarkets will also show the initiative and will take this Dutch supermarket as an example.
This plastic-free aisle is a great step in the fight against plastic pollution. The threat that plastic waste poses for our oceans and other ecosystems has recently become one of the main topics on the international agenda. International leaders are becoming increasingly worried.
A Guardian investigation brought to light the fact that UK supermarkets produce around 1m tonnes of plastic waste a year and contribute greatly to the worsening problem.
Sarah Sutherland, co-founder of A Plastic Planet, described the achievement as “a landmark moment for the global fight against plastic pollution.”
She went on to say: “For decades shoppers have been sold the lie that we can’t live without plastic in food and drink. A plastic-free aisle dispels all that. Finally we can see a future where the public have a choice about whether to buy plastic or plastic-free.”
