Miguel loves music but it has been banned in his family for many generations after his Mama Coco’s father, who was a musician, left his family to pursue his musical career. On the Día de Muertos, when Mexicans honour their dead, Miguel finds himself inexplicably in the Land of the Dead. He sets out on an adventure to find his great-great-great grandfather, Mexico’s most famous musician, to be blessed so he can return to his family in the Land of the Living before he is stuck forever.
‘Coco’ is truly remarkable – Pixar has a way of outdoing itself with each of its new productions. The film is a colourful and honest portrayal of Mexico’s culture, especially the Day of the Dead beliefs and traditions. It is also a film about the importance of family and remembering those we have lost, as well as doing everything in your power to achieve your dreams.
Even though it is an animated film, it is a truly moving and deep story that explores the complexity of human and family relationships. ‘Coco’ is a film that the whole family will be able to enjoy – and it won the Best Animated Feature award at the Oscars, so what other reason do you need to watch it?!
