Coronavirus updates: Turkey sets to its first full lockdown

Later on Thursday, Turkey is entering its first full lockdown. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the country will undergo strict measures from local time 7 PM on Thursday and it will be ended on May 17.

  • It is hoped the measures will save Turkey’s summer tourism and stop the coronavirus spread.
  • For the preparation for this lockdown, Turkey’s streets are crowded as well as the shopping centers and the traffic-heavy.
  • Amid the ban on alcohol, locals are trying to stockpile alcohol. Their WhatsApp groups are now dominated by messages about how life will be in the coming days.
  • Last year, in this time Turkey was seen as a success story for its early combative action as was even praised by the World Health Organization.

Now after a year, it is among the countries worst affected by COVID with the highest infection rate in Europe.
