Cuban president Raul Castro is expected to step aside as ruler straight after passing his successor to Miguel Diaz-Canel on Thursday, the position he’s filled since his brother Fidel’s resignation.
With his resignation, nearly two decades into this century, and less than two years after Fidel Castro’s death, Castro rules in Cuba is going to be end.
Members are widely expected to select current First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel, a 57-year-old who has climbed the party ranks and has been Raul Castro’s right-hand man since 2013.
Regarding this resignation Camilo Condis, general manager of Artecorte, a community project in Havana said, “this is an important moment for Cuba, but the truth is, nobody knows what to expect, I mean, other than Fidel and Raúl, who is there? You didn’t really know anyone else.”
During his second term, President Obama worked with him to thaw the historically chilly relations between the two countries and signed multiple bilateral agreements with Castro on major issues including drug trafficking, maritime security and migration.
“To have someone without the family name or the same aura of revolutionary is a historic shift,” said Geoff Thale of the Washington Office of Latin America.
