The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has confirmed that there will be a double charge of the single-use plastic bags. Initially, most carrier bags cost 5p, but are set to go up to 10p. Moreover, the payment could be introduced not just in big supermarkets but small retail shops as well.
“We have taken huge strides to improve the environment, and the charge on plastic bags in supermarkets and big retailers have demonstrated the difference we can achieve by making small changes to our everyday habits”, May commented on the upcoming higher tax on plastic bags, aiming to achieve “a greener, healthier environment for future generations”.
Moreover, plastic bag sales have already declined by 86% in the last two years. The Environment Secretary Michael Gove commented:
“Thanks to the public’s support, our plastic bag charge has been hugely successful.”
Furthermore, Friends of the Earth plastic campaigner Emma Priestland, has introduced the idea of fully banning the single-use plastic bags and believes the government should set this as a law. She added:
“Marine animals are just as likely to choke on straws and coffee cups, yet these have so far escaped government action.”
