The first-known recording by David Bowie, has been sold at auction in Britain for £39,360, nearly quadruple of its estimate price. He was just 16-year-old singer of a band called the Konrads while he made it.
David Hadfield discovered the track, titled ‘I Never Dreamed’ recorded in a studio in 1963, earlier this year in an old bread basket. It was expected to sell for at least £10,000.
Hadfield served as the band’s drummer and manager. Bowie appeared on the song under his given name – David Jones – and it was the first time his voice had featured on a recording.
Bowie achieved reputation as one of the most innovative voices in rock over a half-century career in which he experimented with soul, disco, jazz and ambient music.
He left the Konrads shortly afterwards and achieved stardom after six years releasing Space Oddity about fictional astronaut Major Tom.
He died of cancer in January 2016, two days after his 69th birthday – and the release of his 25th studio album.
