Four male presenters at the BBC have accepted a reduction in their salaries months after a list of the BBC’s top earners published last year revealed a significant gender pay gap at the broadcasting institution.
Jeremy Vine, John Humphrys, Huw Edwards and Jon Sopel are those who have agreed to reduce their wages.
The BBC’s China editor Carrie Gracie recently resigned from her post after rejecting a £45,000 pay rise. She stated that the gender pay gap was completely unacceptable and that men and women should be paid the same for doing the same work.
The report published by the BBC showed that the highest paid male was BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans who was on a salary of £2m, whereas the best paid female was Strictly Come Dancing‘s Claudia Winkleman who earned considerably less, between £450,000 to £499,000.
The BBC, after the publication of the pay report, stated that they were going to conduct a thorough analysis and would be working towards making the pay scale fairer.
