British artist Adelaide Damoah stars in ‘Genesis’ – a powerful body of work that explores sexuality, race and the societal positions of women. Damoah integrates her own identity into the exhibition as she assumes the role of a black female power. The artist cities David Hammons and Ana Mendieta as key influencers in the production of Genesis. The exhibition is inclusive as it presents many forms of arts – paintings, prints and performative works.
Interestingly, the colours – black and gold are heavily used throughout the exhibition, Damoah explains the reasons for this when stating ‘Black and gold have been used both for aesthetic and metaphorical reasons.
Black is evoking skin colour, but also absence as a lived experience. Meanwhile, gold is referring to Ghana’s historical source of wealth which gave it its colonial name (Gold Coast)” The exhibition includes a live streamed performance by Damoah which showcasing the way in which the exhibition came forth.
The exhibition will take place 2-30 October 2018 in London and will run throughout the week. Genesis is also in association with Bloomsbury Festival, a five-day celebration to pioner creativity and is known to campaign equality and democracy within the arts. Damoah ensures that the exhibtion is for people of many backgrounds, ethnicities and languages to come and enjoy!
Ahead of Damoah’s launch, there will be an all female exhibition at Gallery Different, London (23-28 September 2018) which will be looking at the social perceptions of women in society and especially the portrayal of women in the arts. So come along and have fun!
