The ‘Spencer’ actress Kristen Stewart, who has been tipped as a Best Actress contender for her portrayal of Princess Diana, seems unconcerned about the award buzz.
Thanks to her current offering, a largely fictional narrative of how Diana survived on a holiday with the royal family in 1991, the actress is hotly anticipated to be one of the Best Actress finalists at the Academy Awards.
When asked about the rumors during an interview on Variety’s “Awards Circuit” podcast, Kristen responded with her usual bluntness.
“I don’t give a s**t,” she said. “The Oscars are such a funny thing. There are so many incredible movies and performances that barely get seen. It definitely says something about where we’re at as a cumulative presence – what we’re looking at, what we care about.”
Kristen, on the other hand, did admit, “I’m grateful that something I was a part of has sparked such a massive debate. We don’t make films so that we can’t interact with one another.” Kristen stated she felt “intimidated” when prepping for the role before to filming.
“The accent is terrifying as heck because everyone knows that voice, and it’s so, so distinct and particular,” she explained. She’s working with a dialect coach to master Princess Diana’s accent while also doing extensive research on the sad royal to ensure she did her justice on screen.
“In terms of research, I’ve gotten through two and a half biographies, and I’m finishing all the material before I actually go make the movie,” she explained.
“It’s one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don’t want to just play Diana – I want to know her implicitly.”
Aside from the humble jokes and “don’t jinx it” energy, it’s evident that Kristen has put a lot of thought and effort into this larger-than-life performance.
Spencer is now playing in theaters.
