Madonna has recently announced on her social media accounts that the Russian government has fined her with a million-dollar bill for supporting the LGBTQ+ community in her public speech during the concert at St Petersburg. Anika Khan reports.
The iconic singer was on her MDNA tour back in 2012 when she delivered an emotional speech after her performance in St Petersburg, Russia. She compared the fights for LGBTQ rights to the 1960s civil rights movement. According to the reports, this led her to a fine of $17,000. However, the singer revealed that she was charged with a much heftier fine, but she never paid it.
She shared the clip of the speech on Twitter and wrote that she was fined with $1 million dollars to stand up for the rights of the LGBTQ community 8 years back. She has received enormous supports from her fans for her passionate speech to stand in solidarity with the Gay community.
In the footage of the speech the star can be heard saying: “I’m here to say that the gay community, and gay people, here and all around the world, have the same rights, the same rights to be treated with dignity, with respect, with tolerance, with compassion, with love.”

Madonna has been supporting the LGBTQ+ community throughout her career. She has actively taken part in the Black Lives Matter protests that took place in London last month. The singer has also received the GLAAS award last year for her contribution to fighting for human rights and bringing in social changes.
