Olympic boxer Nicola Adams has been the first British person to be turned into a Barbie as part of their ‘Shero’ range, launched to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Nicola Adams has two Olympic gold medals to her name so far – so Mattel, the company behind Barbie, have decided that she would be part of the range to recognise her outstanding contribution to boxing.
The Barbie doll sports her signature cropped her and full boxing gear and gloves, all emblazoned with her nickname – Lioness.
Nicola Adams is the 15th inspiring woman to be added to Barbie’s ‘Shero’ range. Other dolls released to date include filmmaker Ava DuVernay and gymnast Gabby Douglas. American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad is also part of the range and became the first hijab-wearing Barbie.
“I am so excited and honoured to be Barbie’s first ever UK Shero and the first ever boxer Barbie,” said Nicola Adams.
“My hope is that everything I do helps more people realise they can do anything they put their mind to,” she added. “That’s why empowering the next generation of kids is something I’m passionate about and it’s great to work with Barbie to share my story now.”
“I hope my doll inspires young girls to believe that they can break boundaries in whatever they choose to do,” Nicola said.
There is also a range of female historical figures that includes Frieda Kahlo, Amelia Earhart and Katherine Johnson, a black NASA mathematician.
