Sarkozy Being Questioned Over Libyan Illegal Financing of Election Campaign

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy is currently in custody and been subjected to questioning by the police over claims that his 2007 campaign election, which saw him elected for the presidency, was partly illegally funded by Gaddafi’s Libyan regime.
The inquiry into the matter was started back in 2013 after Mediapart published a document that was evidence of the Gaddafi regime illegally funding Sarkozy’s campaign with over €50m.
Sarkozy and one of his ministers claimed the document which was signed by Libyan officials was fake but a French court said otherwise and so the inquiry was launched.
Despite the inquiry being on going for close to five years, this is the first time Sarkozy has actually been questioned by the authorities. Sarkozy has been adamant over the years about the allegations being completely false.
While Nicolas Sarkozy is being questioned about the illegal financing of his 2007 election campaign, he is also set to appear before the courts on another matter – answering for the supposed false accounting carried out by his 2012 re-election campaign.
