A suicide bombing happened on Wednesday, 21 March, near a shrine in Kabul where the bomber blew himself up during the celebration of the Persian New Year known as Nawruz and ended up killing more than 32 people as well as injuring dozens.
Though the city had been on alert for attacks over the Nawruz holiday, the bomber still managed to detonate his explosives while people were enjoying the festival in Kart-a Sakhi Shrine, despite the tight government security.
Amaq news agency said the responsibility for the deadly attack has been claimed by The Islamic State terror group. This is the fifth suicide bombing in Kabul in recent weeks.
Regarding the attacks, President Ashraf Ghani offered to hold peace talks with The Taliban last month, Afghanistan’s largest terrorist group, to reimpose their version of strict Islamic law but they denied any involvement with this.
“We had our security in place in and around the shrine,” said Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danesh. “All the casualties were young men who were either passing by on the road or gathering to enjoy Nawruz”.
