The Postal Museum is chosen as one of five UK finalists for the biggest museum prize in the world the Art Fund ‘Museum of the Year Award 2018’.
Known as the home of the unique underground heritage attraction Mail Rail, The Postal Museum which is situated in Clerkenwell, is the only London attraction shortlisted for the prestigious award.
This year ‘Museum of the Year’ winner will be announced at a ceremony at the V&A Museum in London on Thursday 5 July 2018, following a final round of judging taking place throughout May and June.
Opening in 2017, the museum contains five zones and leads visitors through five centuries of world-class curiosities which provids a different view on some of the world’s most significant historical events.
It displayes the sculpture of Queen Elizabeth II, a five-wheeled bicycle invented by the Victorians, a gold Olympic post box, a priceless sheet of the world’s first stamps-the Penny Black and more.
Larger items on display include a 1941 motorbike used by postmen, a Bristol to London Mail Coach from the 1800s, and a 1980s Dodge Spacevan postbus,. In the gellary a beautiful living wall interspersed with shiny red Royal Mail Post Boxes, a perfect place to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink.
The Museum’s latest temporary exibition ‘Voices from the Deep’ runs until 13 January 2019 where a display of more than 700 personal letters is there which were trapped at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for more than three quarters of a century.
Across the street the one-hundred-year-old Post Office railway and board a miniature train designed to transport visitors through its stalactite-filled tunnels.
Mail Rail’s interactive train ride lasts approximately fifteen minutes and passes through the tunnels that run beneath the Mount Pleasant sorting office, stopping at the original and largely unchanged station platforms where an impressive audio-visual display provides an insight into how the railway kept post coursing through London 22 hours a day for more than three quarters of a century.
