Tiger Woods disclosed that he had thrown back tears after waiting five years for a tournament victory when he won the Golf Tour Championship in East Lake.
Among the extraordinary scenes in the final hole, the 14-time major champion was assaulted by the spectators before sealing a two-stroke victory in 80th PGA Tour over Billy Horschel.
“I can’t believe I pulled this off,” Woods said Sunday during the trophy presentation at the Tour Championship, where he gave thousands of delirious fans at East Lake, and millions more around the world.
In recent years, Woods has been faced back problems and four operations, with his recuperation he was unsure about playing competitive golf again as recently as 12 months ago.
“To be able to play golf again and earn my way back to this level is something that I was hoping I would do at the beginning of the year, but I didn’t know”, said Woods.
In May last year, Woods was arrested on a driving under the influence charge after being found slumped at the wheel of his car in Florida.
Woods will be part of the US team for Ryder Cup in France from Friday where whatever Woods has threatened to end his woes in 2018, finishing runner up at both the Valspar Invitational and PGA Championship so far this year.
“It was just a grit out there,” he added. “I loved everything, the struggle and the grit and the difficult conditions, just to have to suck and hit shots, I loved everything”.
