On Sunday afternoon, at least 64 people, many believed to be children, died in the Siberian city of Kemerovo as an enormous fire swept through the crowded shopping center. As the kids were trapped inside the movie theaters, many of them called family members to say goodbye while they find a block in fire exist.
This tragedy happened on Russia’s western Siberian city of Kemerovo at “Winter Cherry shopping mall’ just before the beginning of school holidays. The fire started on the top floor of the four-story shopping mall which ended up taking life of nearly hundreds.
Russian social networks were flooded with grief, and a measure of anger over the response. “We are burning, perhaps this is goodbye, I love you all” a 13-year-old named Maria posted on her social media account.
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the scene of the blaze Monday and blamed “criminal negligence” for the tragedy.
Vladimir Chernov, a deputy governor of the region said “The cause of the fire remains unknown”, though he suggested a child may have used a lighter to ignite the foam filler of a trampoline in the play area.
