US President Donal Trump received an explicit warning from his national security advisers on Tuesday which in all-capital letters stating “DO NOT CONGRATULATE,” Russian President Vladimir Putin on his re-election. He chose to ignore the advice and congratulated Putin anyway.
Trump told reporters at the White House that he had offered his well-wishes on Putin’s new six-year term and added “We had a very good call,” the two world leaders “will probably be meeting in the not-too-distant future to discuss the arms race, which is getting out of control.”
According to a report by The Washington Post, it is been noted that Trump chose not to follow the advice to condemn Putin for the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain with a powerful nerve agent.
The post said It was not clear whether Trump read the material. Rather, the White House said the leaders discussed “the state of bilateral relations and resolved to continue dialogue about mutual national security priorities and challenges.”
“An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections,” said Senator John McCain “and by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election”.
